W&P's CRB Check Services are now DBS Checks
Standard, Enhanced & Adult First
From 1 December 2012 the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) will carry out the functions previously undertaken by the Criminal Records Bureau and the Independent Safeguarding Authority.
The DBS was established under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 and will provide a joined up service to combine the criminal records and barring functions.
The service and processes are not changing as a result of the merger and the DBS will continue to deliver their services to customers as normal throughout this transition period.
The primary role of DBS is to help employers in England and Wales make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups including children. This follows a Coalition commitment to scale back the Vetting and Barring Scheme and the criminal records regime to common sense levels.
W&P's CRB Check Services are now DBS Checks.
As a registered body with the Disclousre and Barring Service W&P are able of

Local police information can be contained on the both copies of the Disclosure.

information is disclosed. An example of information contained on both Disclosures
could be details of a child protection case conference. Chief Constables can
decide that some information is relevant to the position but do not wish the
prospective employee to see sight of this information. This could be details
of suspected criminal activity were an arrest has not taken place but is anticipated.

DBS Volunteers Check - £14
The DBS define a volunteer as "a person who is engaged in any activity which involves spending time, unpaid (except for travelling and other approved out-of-pocket expenses), doing something which aims to benefit someone (individuals or groups) other than, or, in addition to close relatives".
The DBS will perform regular audits on volunteer applications to ensure "free-of-charge" checks are not being abused. They are very strict on how this is interpreted and they specifically exclude family members of the business owner, foster parents or carers, and people on work placements working towards a qualification or skill to help their employment prospects.

DBS Adult First (formerly ISA) - £14
Adult First checks are exclusive to the health sector for organisations that wish to employ a “care worker”. Getting a satisfactory Adult First check will mean the care worker can start work in a care home, for a domiciliary care agency or as an adult placement carer before a full DBS check has been completed. Requests for Adult First DBS check carry precise criteria and are permissible only where it is necessary to take such action because of a real danger that staffing levels will fall below statutory obligations.
