204 Institutional Abuse

Hi
Can anyone help with this Q please?
'Define institutional abuse, give signs & symptoms'
I wrote "Abuse occuring in places such as care homes and children's homes" signs/symptoms "reluctance to have care from certain members of staff. Unexplained bruisin. Being withdrawn. Not wanting to take part in group activities"
My tutor has said 'define further. Think of working in person centered ways & the choices rights individuals have compared with how care organisations used to work. Give signs/symptoms'

I just don't know where to start. Can anyone point me in the right direction

Thanks

Hi poppy2011,

Institutional abuse is where the setting (ie 'institution') is the abuser. It may be through, for example, having set meals that some individuals cannot eat or having rules such as no one is allowed in their rooms between certain hours or charging extra for services already paid for etc.

Hope that helps

Hi,
further examples are:
'Batch care' - treating all people the same regardless of need or diagnosis, no flexibility in waking, going to bed, no choice in food, clothing, routine is inflexible, rigid, deprivation of liberty, segregation, isolation. A failure to promote respect, dignity, choice, independence, privacy, inappropriate or poor care, poor professional care, denial of access to toilet or bathing facilities, restriction or denial to medical or social care, lack of response to complaints.
Individuals may display an inability to make decisions, low self-esteem, mood swings, depression, repetitive behaviour, anxiety, be seeking constant reassurance, be eager to please.

I hope this helps.
