15/08/11 - Most Britons don't trust care homes

Three-quarters of Britons intend to look after their older relatives themselves because they do not trust residential homes to care for them properly, a survey has suggested.

The research found that two-thirds of female respondents would feel they were letting a loved one down by putting them in a home.

And a quarter fear they would not be able to visit their relatives as much as they would like if they had to go into a home, according to a poll of 2,000 men and women whose parents are beginning to struggle to live in their own houses.

Figures from Carers UK suggest about 6.4million Britons have care duties, a rise of 9% since 2001.

Deciding how to help a relative unable to live safely in their home is often a difficult and emotional decision, said Michelle Mitchell of Age UK.

'However, most residential homes provide a good standard of care,' she added.
