05/12/05 - Older Carers are The Hidden Backbone of the Social Care System
Counsel and Care is calling for greater recognition
to be given to older carers. Their hard work, long hours and dedication
must not go unnoticed says the national charity.
Most of the calls that Counsel and Care’s advice service receives are
from carers or relatives of people who are over 60. The calls highlight
that there are often two people in need of care and support - the older
person and the person who has the responsibility for coordinating or
providing care. This role is physically, emotionally and financially
demanding.
Counsel and Care is calling for a greater awareness of Carers’ Allowance
and who is entitled to receive it. Carers also have the right to an
assessment from social services, regardless of whether the person they
care for receives services.
Stephen Burke, Chief Executive of Counsel and Care, said: “Older carers
are the hidden backbone of the social care system. It is crucial that
carers are given as much support as possible, that they know what they
are entitled to as a carer, and that they feel in control of their caring
role. Greater recognition is needed of the role played by older carers
in supporting other older people to live in their own home.”
