31/07/06 - New CSCI chief inspector appointed

The Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) has announced that Paul Snell has been appointed as the organisation’s Chief Inspector. This announcement follows the appointment of David Behan, CSCI’s current Chief Inspector, as Director General for Social Care at the Department of Health.

Paul Snell is currently CSCI’s Director of Inspection, Regulation and Review; before he joined the Commission he was Director of Social Services at Nottingham City Council.

Commenting on the appointment, CSCI Chair Dame Denise Platt said:“I am delighted that we have been able to appoint a chief inspector of such high calibre and with such a strong commitment to people who use social care services. Paul Snell is an experienced leader with a strong track record of making a difference for people who use services. He played a significant role in creating CSCI and helped shape our ambitious agenda, which he will now carry forward in the months ahead.”

Paul Snell said:

“I am pleased and privileged to have the opportunity to lead the Commission for Social Care Inspection, which has become a well-established and respected organisation under David Behan’s leadership. I want to continue to focus above all on the experiences of people who use social care services. I also want to support our staff to ensure that CSCI continues to deliver its ambitious programme of work and to manage effectively the transitions facing CSCI in the next two years.”

Paul Snell joined CSCI as Director of Inspection, Regulation and Review in March 2004. This role leads the delivery arm of the Commission, managing nine regional directors and the national director for service inspection and Value for Money. Prior to his appointment to CSCI, Paul Snell spent seven years as Director of Social Services at Nottingham City Council, including a spell as Acting Chief Executive. Before that, he held management positions in several local authorities. He is a GSCC-registered social worker.
