21/11/06 - CSCI publishes latest advice bulletin for care services

The Commission for Social Care Inspection has published the latest in its series of bulletins on quality issues in social care, designed to help those who run care services to learn from best practice examples and the latest thinking on a wide range of issues.

Better safe than sorry

The bulletin concerns the safeguarding of adults in care homes.

The bulletin offers advice to care homes, and examples of good practice, on how they can put in place the necessary procedures to safeguard the adults in their care.

In addition the bulletin shows how care homes’ responsibilities fit into the larger picture of all of those agencies involved in safeguarding adults.

Announcing the publication of the bulletin, titled Better safe than sorry: Improving the system that safeguards adults living in care homes, CSCI Chief Inspector Paul Snell said: “People who live in care homes – and their families and friends – need to be confident that they are safe and well cared for.

This means that staff must be properly trained and the right systems must be in place to enable staff to act appropriately.”

But procedures alone will not keep people safe, he went on.

“What matters is that staff treat all adults in their care with dignity and respect and that they know how to recognise signs of abuse and neglect, and how to prevent it.”
