What is CQC registration?

How long does CQC registration take?

Anyone delivering regulated care activities — such as personal care, treatment of disease, or nursing — must register.

What documents are needed for CQC registration?

You’ll need a Statement of Purpose, full policies and procedures, Registered Manager details, a DBS check, and evidence of your skills and experience.

Can I register without a Registered Manager?

I’m a qualified nurse and want to start a domiciliary care business as the Registered Manager. I haven’t worked in care before – will my nursing background be enough for CQC registration?

It’s unlikely, unfortunately. Even with a nursing degree, the CQC expects you to have experience managing a similar type of care service. Ideally, you should have at least one year of experience as a Registered Manager or Deputy Manager.
You’ll also need a formal qualification in care management – specifically a Level 5 Diploma in Health and Social Care Management. You don’t need to finish the course before you apply, but you do need to show the CQC that you’ve enrolled and are working towards it.

I’ve worked as a care worker for many years but have no management experience. I want to open a care business and be the Registered Manager. Will my care experience be enough for CQC registration?

Your hands-on care experience is a big plus, but without any management experience or a formal management qualification, the CQC is unlikely to approve you as a Registered Manager straight away.
That said, you can still move forward by enrolling on a Level 5 Diploma in Health and Social Care Management. While experience in a leadership role is preferred, CQC may consider your application if your overall knowledge and background are strong.
You don’t need to finish the course before applying, but you must show proof that you’ve enrolled and are working towards it.
